General FAQs

What is required to participate?

  • Each school can have one team.
  • Each team needs a head coach.
  • Elementary can officially register 16 students, but your team can be larger or smaller.
  • Middle or high school teams can register 15 students on their "primary" team; up to 15 additional students can compete on an "alternate" team.
  • The team registration fee is $100 for elementary; fees are $315 for middle and high school teams.
  • Many events require support materials.
  • Event coaches are a great help.

Who participates?

  • Public and private schools from Macomb and St. Clair counties
  • More than 70 elementary schools
  • More than 40 Middle and High schools
  • Some teams formed 25 years ago. Some started last year.

How long does the season last?

  • Teams register in the fall.
  • Middle school and high school coaches get trained by December.
  • Elementary coaches get trained by January.
  • Kids and coaches prepare for several months; workshops are offered to help for some events.
  • Middle and high school teams can attend practice "invitational" tournaments.
  • Some school districts host practice tournaments for elementary teams.

When and where is the tournament?

  • The regional tournament for middle and high school teams is Saturday, March 23rd, 2013 at Macomb Community College south campus.
  • The top teams (~20%) qualify to compete at the State tournament at Michigan State University about a month later.
  • The top two middle school and two high school teams from the state tournament qualify for the national tournament.
  • The regional tournament for elementary teams is Saturday, May 4th, 2013 at Macomb Community College south campus.  There is no state-level tournament for elementary.

I'm just starting a team. What help can I get?

  • Macomb Science Olympiad provides rule books, and workshops for coaches and kids.  See the calendars in each section (elementary, secondary) of this website for more details.
  • Be sure to attend informational meetings for the Head Coach.
  • You can be mentored by an experienced coach.
  • Community organizations provide workshops.
  • We have published a coach's handbook for elementary and one for secondary.
  • Event rule clarifications are published on this website.

What are the events?

  • The elementary tournament is comprised of 16 events.
  • The secondary tournament has 23 events each for middle and high schools.

Click on Events on the left side of this page, then click on Elementary Event Rules. The page that opens allows you to download and print the entire current rulebook, or the rules for specific individual events.
