Volunteer

See the available volunteer roles at our tournaments in March.

Because many Science Olympiad activities take place inside a school, you may assume that it is a school-run program.  Not true.  Macomb Science Olympiad is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization, run entirely by volunteers.

Helping to provide this fantastic learning opportunity for so many highly-motivated students is a very-rewarding experience.  There is plenty of fun to go around.

There are many levels of volunteers.  You can wade in gradually and test the water or dive in.  You can read more about the various roles below, and where to start.

Fill out this short survey to let us know what interests you.

    Head Coach for a team

The sad truth is that some schools are without a team simply because no one has stepped up to be their Head Coach.  If you are wondering why your school doesn't have a team, this could be the reason.  You don't have to be a teacher.  Many successful teams are parent-led.

Every Science Olympiad team has one Head Coach who is responsible for the big picture tasks like team registration and recruiting event coaches.

    Event Coach for a team

Have a direct impact on the experience and success of a pair of students.  This would likely mean meeting with those students on a weekly basis for several months.

Don't think you have to be an expert in a subject to be a good event coach.  Usually coaches say they had a great time learning right along with the kids.

If your child is in an event that you coach, you will find that Science Olympiad is a catalyst for great activities that you never would have done.

Depending on your interest, contact the Head Coach for your school; or if you don't have a team affiliation, contact one of us:

    Elementary regional tournament in May

May 11, or set up on Friday May 10

Volunteer recruiting for this tournament will begin in April.

Location: Macomb Community College - South Campus in Warren.

Most volunteer roles are for helping Event Supervisors run a competitive event.

    Event Supervisor

The topics in which students compete are called "events".  Each event requires someone to organize and run it at a tournament.  It is not unusual for that person to have some skill or professional background that makes them an appropriate match for the role.

We have a handbook that better explains what you can expect as an Event Supervisor.  It was written for Elementary, but is decent regardless.

The events for the middle and high school tournament rotate more frequently, and thus there is typically a need for new Supervisors each year.

    Tournament Planning Committees

Our tournaments and related activities to help teams be successful are organized by two committees... one for Elementary and one for Middle and High School.  These groups meet monthly, and collaborate in between those meetings to accomplish the work of Macomb Science Olympiad.  Most activity occurs during the school year.
